Crafty Crafty, Catchy Monkey

So interesting start to 2014! Busy, tragic and wonderful all at the same time. The only thing that hasn’t changed is Time escaping my desperate clutches.

Naughty Time, go sit in your basket.

Given the intensity of my course, I genuinely couldn’t see my birthday (November past) or Christmas far enough. I’d be lucky to take an evening off. As the course continued, I actually didn’t think I’d have time for…well, anything else. But I suppose that is why I tend to maintain low expectations of things – it almost guarantees the opposite.

See exhibits A through D. This Laidig has been a thoroughly busy bee. …That really wasn’t meant to rhyme. Forgive me. Guess I do have the time after all!

In amongst it all, I also had a birthday treat (ok, I had several, but this one was extra lovely). If my on-and-off two year stint in America (along with continuous trips to visit relatives) did anything for my taste in music, it introduced a veryveryvery young me to Barenaked Ladies. I know they’re Canadian, but in mid-nineties Chicago, countless radio stations were playing them.

By the time Stunt came out (you’re welcome for that link) myself and Mum were driving between Guildford and Edinburgh almost weekly. With a plethora of mix-tapes of all things Indie, Stunt was on there. It reminded us of our time in Chicago, and as a result, 7/8 year old me knew every word to ‘One Week‘. Yeah, that’s right, before it was cool – kidding! I’m not that person. I still know every word. It became that much of a party piece, I have actually tried to teach friends the words. Same with Blink 182’s ‘Happy Holidays‘ and ‘Feeling This‘ – all the parts, in a oner. What can I say, it’s a gift.

You can probably see where this is going: BNL came to Glasgow’s O2 and I got tickets! (They also went to Edinburgh’s Picturehouse, i.e. the city I live in, but better gig venue is better). They were unbelievable, and I had completely forgotten how talented the lot of them are. Like, actual talent. And Tyler closed the show with an incredible rendition of ‘Whole Lotta Love’.

I had planned to end this post with their encore ‘One Week’ that I had filmed, but the audio on it was appaaalling.

Instead, I’ll give you some other lucky bastard’s person’s successful recording of ‘Whole Lotta Love’.
